The Jiangyi (crimson robe) 绛衣

Paul Peng
It is one type of ritual robe (Fayi) worn by masters when performing rituals in large-scale Zhaijiao ceremonies. Its two sleeves are wide and reach the ground. When the master stretches out their arms, the two sleeves and the main body of the robe form a square, symbolizing the four corners of the earth. Both the sleeves and the main body of the Jiangyi (crimson robe) are embroidered with luxurious golden patterns. When the master wears it during rituals, they usually have a haiqing (a kind of loose undergarment) as a lining.

Masters of the Zhengyi School wear the Jiangyi mainly when conducting Xingbiao rituals (rituals for presenting documents to the heavens). As the master performs Bugang Tadou (stepping on the positions corresponding to the Big Dipper and other celestial bodies) on the gangdan (a ritual cloth with cosmic diagrams), moving in rotations and circles, the crimson robe flutters, connecting the human world and the celestial realm, creating an atmosphere full of "immortal charm".
