The Xuanzhu Lu 玄珠录 Record of the Mysterious Pearl

Paul Peng
Xuanzhu Lu (Record of the Mysterious Pearl) is a collection of sayings by Wang Xuanlan of the Tang Dynasty, recorded by Wang Taixiao, consisting of two volumes. As a work in the style of recorded sayings, it was compiled by Wang Taixiao, a disciple of Wang Xuanlan, based on private notes from various people, and serves as the main material for studying Wang Xuanlan's Taoist thought.

The book contains more than 120 of his sayings, expounding on theoretical issues such as the Dao and things, the substance of the Dao, the nature of the Dao, being and non-being, truth and falsity, movement and stillness, and mind and nature. Its distinctive feature is the integration of Buddhist ideas into Laozi's thought, using Buddhist Madhyamaka philosophy for argumentation, making it a typical work that synthesizes Buddhism and Laozi's teachings, reflecting the developmental trend of Taoist theory in the Tang Dynasty.

The author holds that the Dao exists universally and absolutely in all things; the Dao is omnipresent, and all things are endowed with life by the Dao. The Dao is inherently tranquil but responds to things through movement, yet in responding to things, it is not burdened by them, for "its true substance is always tranquil." The true aspect of the Dao's substance is "emptiness," just like "the body of a mirror." Among the categories of mind and environment, the mind is often regarded as primary: the arising and ceasing of the mind determine the arising and ceasing of external phenomena, and the "proper nature" of the human mind has boundless power, and so on.

Xuanzhu Lu is included in the Taixuan Division of the Zhengtong Daozang (Orthodox Taoist Canon).
