Hao Datong (1140–1212)

Hao Datong was a native of Ninghai (now part of Shandong Province) during the Jin Dynasty.

His original given name was Sheng, later renamed Lin; his Taoist monastic name was Datong. He adopted the literary names "Tianranzi" (Master Serene) and "Guangningzi" (Master Guangning), and styled himself "Taigu Daoren" (Taoist of Primordial Antiquity). He was known among the people as "Guangning Zhenren" (Perfected One Guangning).
Born into an official family, it is said that he received the esoteric meanings of The Book of Changes (a classic of Chinese philosophy) from a divine figure in a dream. Thereafter, he devoted himself to the study of The Book of Changes and divination.

In the 8th year of the Dading era (1168), he became a disciple of Wang Chongyang and joined the Quanzhen School (a major Taoist school in medieval China).

In the 22nd year of the Dading era (1182), he resided in Zhending. Every time he gave lectures in the main hall of the Taoist temple, hundreds of people—both from near and far—would come to listen. During this period, he founded the Huashan Branch of the Quanzhen School.

In the 6th year of the Zhiyuan era of the Yuan Dynasty (1269), he was posthumously conferred the title "Guangning Tongxuan Taigu Zhenren" (Perfected One of Guangning, Who Penetrates Mystery and Embodies Primordial Antiquity). He was one of the "Seven True Disciples of the North" (a group of seven core disciples who propagated the Quanzhen School) of the Quanzhen School.

He authored works including Taigu Ji (Collection of Primordial Antiquity, in four volumes) and Taiyi Tu (Diagram of the Great Change).

He passed away from illness in the 1st year of the Chongqing era (1212) at the age of 73.
