The Liu Lie 刘烈

The Liu Lie 刘烈

Paul Peng
Liu Lie (?-1173) was a Taoist during the Southern Song Dynasty, who styled himself "Xuguzi" (Master of the Void Valley). He was officially registered as a Taoist priest at Taiping Xingguo Palace on Mount Lushan.
In the 6th year of the Shaoxing era of Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty (1136), he built Zhenyi Hermitage and resided there himself. He studied the meanings of scriptures in the Daozang (Taoist Canon) and embodied the simple and unadorned style of ancient times. Many scholar-officials were happy to associate and interact with him.

In the 1st year of the Longxing era of Emperor Xiaozong (1163), he wrote Zhouyi Zhengjing Zhujie (Annotations on the Orthodox Classic of the I Ching) and Liuqian Zongkuo Jiyao (A Comprehensive Summary of the Essential Principles of the Six Thousand [Texts]). He went to the imperial capital to present these works to the emperor, who then summoned him to inquire about the essential principles of Taoism.

Liu Lie lived in the mountains for more than ten years. In the 9th year of the Qiandao era (1173), he passed away without suffering from any illness in July.

His works that circulated in the world include Huandan Baipian (One Hundred Essays on the Elixir of Return), Zhouyi Jieyi (Explanations of the Meaning of the I Ching), and Lidai Junchen Kuoyao Tu (A Summary Chart of Rulers and Ministers Through the Ages). In addition, he copied by hand fifteen volumes of Dengzhen Yinjue (Esoteric Instructions for Ascending to Immortality) and nine volumes of Shangjing (The Supreme Scripture), which were preserved in Zhenyi Hermitage on Mount Lushan.

(From Volume 5 of Lishi Zhenxian Tidao Tongjian (Comprehensive Mirror of Real Immortals and Dao Practitioners Through the Ages) and Lushan Taiping Xingguo Gong Caifang Zhenjun Shishi (Records of the True Lord Collected at Taiping Xingguo Palace on Mount Lushan))
