Temple Taoism
During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, the religious quality of Taoism was fundamentally improved and developed into mature Temple Taoism. Temple Taoism possessed some forms similar to Western churches. Taoists became religious professionals organized according to Taoist ranks. They obeyed written religious rules and precepts, were affiliated to corresponding religious institutions, wore special costumes, and practiced in fixed temples, hence the name "Temple Taoism".
Temple Taoism formed a relatively complete set of religious theories and doctrines, had its own scriptures and practice methods through which religious experiences could be obtained, and was equipped with corresponding magic arts, taboos, and religious rituals. Taoism's development into church-style Temple Taoism marked the maturity of Taoism.
