Inviting the Sacred Beings 请圣

Inviting the Sacred Beings 请圣

paulpeng
"Inviting the Sacred Beings" is a ritual where the Taoist master, while performing a ceremony, holds incense and invokes celestial immortals, true saints, and divine beings to descend to the altar. A scripture states: "Incense rises from a sincere heart; smoke comes forth from faith. Sincerity connects to the celestial realm, and all true beings descend the jade steps." This indicates that incense serves as an intermediary for communication between humans and gods, hence the saying, "When presenting memorials to the heavens in this ceremony, one must rely on incense to convey [the message]." It is hoped that immortals from the Three Islands and all true beings from the Ten Continents will attend the Dharma assembly and descend to the jade altar.

The Gaogong (senior Taoist priest) also reads out the official document for inviting the gods, requesting the Duty Gongcao (functional deity in charge of errands) to present this document to the Chief Sacred Official of the Three Realms. After the memorial text is delivered [to the heavens], a gracious decree is issued, and the immortals and true beings descend [to the altar].

Sacred Communication

The Bridge Between Realms

Invoking the Divine represents one of the most fundamental and sacred practices in Taoist ritual ceremonies. This profound act, known as "请圣" (Qǐng Shèng), serves as the spiritual gateway through which Taoist masters invite celestial beings, immortals, and divine spirits to descend from the heavenly realms and participate in earthly rituals.

"Through sincere devotion and proper ritual conduct, the mortal realm opens its doors to welcome the divine presence, creating a sacred space where heaven and earth unite in harmonious communion."

🕯️ Incense: The Sacred Bridge

Central to the divine invocation ceremony is the sacred use of incense, which serves as the mystical medium connecting the human and divine realms. Ancient Taoist wisdom reveals the profound spiritual significance of this aromatic bridge between worlds.

Ancient Scripture

"香自诚心起,烟从信里来"

"Incense arises from a sincere heart, smoke emerges from faith within"

"一诚通天界,诸真下瑶阶"

"One sincere heart connects to the heavenly realm, all immortals descend the jade stairs"

The Mystical Properties of Sacred Smoke

This profound teaching reveals that incense is not merely a pleasant fragrance, but a spiritual technology that transforms sincere devotion into visible, ascending prayers. The rising smoke carries human intentions skyward, while creating a pathway for divine beings to descend to the earthly altar.

📜 The Formal Divine Invitation

The invocation ceremony involves a formal and elaborate process where Taoist masters extend official invitations to specific celestial beings, following ancient protocols that ensure proper respect and spiritual efficacy.

Celestial Invitation

Summoning Immortals from Three Islands (三岛神仙)

The master formally invites the immortals dwelling on the three sacred islands of Taoist cosmology to grace the ritual altar with their divine presence. These legendary realms house the most accomplished spiritual beings who have transcended mortal limitations.

Ten Continents

Calling Sages of Ten Continents (十洲诸真)

The ceremony extends invitations to the enlightened beings residing in the ten mystical continents, asking them to descend to the jade altar. These realms represent different aspects of spiritual perfection and cosmic wisdom.

Official Protocol

Reading the Divine Invitation Document (请神关文)

The high-ranking master recites an official invitation document, following precise ceremonial language that has been refined over centuries. This formal approach demonstrates proper respect for the divine hierarchy and cosmic order.

🏛️ The Celestial Administrative System

Taoist cosmology recognizes a sophisticated divine bureaucracy that mirrors earthly governmental structures. The invocation process respects this celestial hierarchy through proper administrative protocols.

⚖️ The Divine Chain of Command

1
Daily Duty Officers (值日功曹)

Local celestial administrators who oversee daily spiritual affairs and serve as intermediaries between mortals and higher divine authorities.

2
Three Realms General Office (三界总圣官司)

The supreme administrative headquarters governing all spiritual matters across the three realms of existence: heaven, earth, and underworld.

3
Divine Response and Descent (恩命下颁,仙真下临)

Upon receiving the formal petition, divine grace flows downward and immortal beings descend to participate in the earthly ceremony.

"This systematic approach reflects the Taoist understanding that even divine interactions must follow proper order and respect established cosmic hierarchies to maintain universal harmony."
