Daoist Star Lore: The 28 Lunar Mansions & Celestial Guardians

To learn the art of observing stars and gazing at the Big Dipper in Taoism, one must first master the Twenty-Eight Constellations!

The origin of the Twenty-Eight Constellations is very ancient. Initially, they were twenty-eight groups of stars (or constellations) used by the ancients as coordinates for observing the movements of the sun, moon, and five planets. The ancients believed that the positions of the stars remained constant relative to each other, and they could be used as markers to indicate the positions of the sun, moon, and five planets. After a long period of observation, the ancients successively selected twenty-eight constellations near the ecliptic and equator as coordinates. Because they are arranged in a circle around the four directions of the sun, moon, and five planets, they are very much like the places where the sun, moon, and five planets reside, so they are called the Twenty-Eight Constellations.

The ancients also divided the Twenty-Eight Constellations into four palaces: the East, South, West, and North. Each palace has seven constellations. The seven constellations belonging to each palace are connected and imagined as the image of an animal, which is regarded as the "Four Spiritual Beings of Heaven, which rectify the four directions".

The seven constellations belonging to the Azure Dragon of the East Palace are: Jue, Kang, Di, Fang, Xin, Wei, and Ji.

The seven constellations belonging to the Vermilion Bird of the South Palace are: Jing, Gui, Liu, Xing, Zhang, Yi, and Zhen.

The seven constellations belonging to the White Tiger of the West Palace are: Kui, Lou, Wei, Mao, Bi, Zi, and Shen.

The seven constellations belonging to the Black Tortoise of the North Palace are: Dou, Niu, Nu, Xu, Wei, Shi, and Bi.

The Twenty-Eight Constellations are not only coordinates for observing the positions of the sun, moon, and five planets, but some of them are also objects of observation for the ancients to determine the age and season. For example, when Shen constellation is due south at the beginning of the night, it is the first month of spring, and when Xin constellation is due south, it is the fifth month of summer, and so on. The Twenty-Eight Constellations revolve in the celestial atmosphere, running continuously in a cycle, respectively in charge of the celestial phenomena in the east, west, south, and north, to distinguish the alternation of day and night, cold and heat, and the changes of yin and yang qi. Over time, the Twenty-Eight Constellations have been given different auspicious and inauspicious meanings to coincide with the ups and downs of the folk world, and thus have become another important theoretical basis for the ancients to choose the right day and time.

The theory of the Twenty-Eight Constellations exists not only in China but also in ancient cultural countries such as India and Rome, but the names and meanings are not exactly the same. The origin of the Twenty-Eight Constellations taking turns to be on duty to judge good and bad is now difficult to verify in detail. The almanacs in the Southern Song Dynasty already adopted this method of on-duty. Later, folk warlocks matched the Twenty-Eight Constellations with twenty-eight animals, further developing the auspicious and inauspicious connotations of the Twenty-Eight Constellations. The matching of the Twenty-Eight Constellations with twenty-eight animals to imply the good and bad of things is very detailed in the popular almanacs for choosing auspicious days. The relevant content expressed in the form of a popular ballad is attached below for reference.

Different schools hold varying views on the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of the Twenty-Eight Constellations. Moreover, there is no absolute "auspicious" or "inauspicious" in the world—thus, the content above is for reference only when selecting auspicious days.

The method of recording days by having the Twenty-Eight Constellations take turns on duty assigns one constellation to represent one day; the twenty-eight constellations correspond to twenty-eight days, repeating in a cycle. A cycle of twenty-eight days exactly equals four weeks. Therefore, you can verify whether the Twenty-Eight Constellations marked on an almanac are correct by using the following mnemonic rhyme: simply check which day of the week (Monday to Sunday) each constellation corresponds to—this matching relationship is permanent.

Thu (四) Fri (五) Sat (六) Sun (日) Mon (一) Tue (二) Wed (三)
Jiao (角) Kang (亢) Di (氐) Fang (房) Xin (心) Wei (尾) Ji (箕)
Dou (斗) Niu (牛) Nu (女) Xu (虚) Wei (危) Shi (室) Bi (壁)
Kui (奎) Lou (娄) Wei (胃) Mao (昴) Bi (毕) Zi (觜) Shen (参)
Jing (井) Gui (鬼) Liu (柳) Xing (星) Zhang (张) Yi (翼) Zhen (轸)
