Song Defang (1183-1247), courtesy name Guangdao, sobriquet Piyun (Wearing Clouds), was a native of Yecheng, Laizhou (now Yexian, Shandong), a famous Taoist of the Yuan Dynasty.


Song Defang studied Taoism with Liu Chuxuan from a young age, and then served as a disciple of Qiu Chuji.


In the fifteenth year of Yuan Taizu (1220), Song Defang followed Qiu Chuji on a westward journey to the Great Snow Mountain to meet Genghis Khan.

After returning from the westward journey, he followed Qiu Chuji to Changchun Palace in Yanjing (now Beijing), serving as a supervisor for the sect.


In the ninth year of Yuan Taizong (1237), following the will and entrustment of his master Qiu Chuji, Song Defang came to Pingyang Xuandu Temple to oversee the carving and printing of the Xuandu Daozang (Taoist Canon).


He personally traveled to Guan Prefecture, Shangdang, Taiyuan, Jinan, and other places in Jin, collecting lost texts.


After ten years, he completed the entire canon.


Song Defang also opened the Jiuyin Cave in Mount Shen in Laizhou and established the Daoyan Temple, becoming an influential Taoist master of his generation, revered as a "Celestial Master."


In the third year of Yuan Naimazhen (1244), when the Xuandu Daozang was completed, Song Defang was granted the title "Perfected Person of Xuandu, Reaching the Tao."


In the seventh year of Yuan Zhiyuan (1270), he was posthumously granted the title "Perfected Person of Xuantong, Promoting Teachings, Wearing Clouds."
