Lingbao Tianzun, originally known as "Shangqing Gaosheng Taishang Yuchen Yuanhuang Dadao Jun". In The Chart of the Ranks and Positions of True Spirits compiled by Tao Hongjing, a high Taoist priest of the Qi and Liang dynasties, he is listed in the middle position of the second divine rank, second only to Yuanshi Tianzun in the middle position of the first divine rank. During the Tang Dynasty, he was once called Taishang Dadao Jun, and from the Song Dynasty onwards, he was known as "Lingbao Tianzun" or "Lingbao Jun".
According to Taoist scriptures about Lingbao Tianzun, he was transformed from the primordial qi generated from the chaotic state before the universe took shape. He was originally "the essence of the two dawns and the purple smoke of the nine celebrations". Later, he was born after 3,700 years of gestation. He resides in the Xuandu Yujing Immortal Mansion in the Shangqing realm, with 300,000 golden boys and 300,000 jade maidens as guards. All gods pay homage to him, and the number of people he has saved is countless. He has thirty-six transformations and seventy-two metamorphoses, and people can see him anytime and anywhere.
In the Hall of the Three Pure Ones in Taoist temples, Lingbao Tianzun is often depicted holding a ruyi (a scepter of good fortune) on the left side of Yuanshi Tianzun, and sometimes holding a Taiji diagram. In large-scale Taoist rituals of fasting and offering, three Pure Ones' divine positions are also often set up, with Lingbao Tianzun placed on the left of Yuanshi Tianzun.
