Bianguai is a crutch shaped like a walking stick. Taoist priests use it to carry green bags, defend themselves, and ensure safety. Taoist books explain that the function of the bianguai is "to manifest the great Dao", and describe it as: "When raised, it supports the heaven and stands on the earth; when carried horizontally, it bears the sun, moon, mountains and rivers; it parts the bones of heaven and earth, and turns out the myriad phenomena in all their complexity." In the eyes of Taoists, the bianguai is actually a magical artifact with boundless power, a treasure that demonstrates the omnipotence of the great Dao. No wonder Taoist priests must carry it with them at all times.
