Three Ways of Resolving Grudges and Disputes in Taoism

Where there are people, there are disputes; where there are disputes, there is a jianghu (world of strife). The ancients said that when ordinary people deal with the world, many harm others due to their impatient hearts, or owe lives and debts. This leads to the accumulation of grudges, resulting in entanglements in the underworld and retribution in the human world. During this process, with gritted teeth and resentment, some chaotic situations will occur. To resolve this, there is a kind of Taoist ritual called resolving grudges and disputes. Through resolving grudges and disputes, the spirits return to the Tao, and the knots and grudges are untied, so that they can both ascend to the paradise.
Resolving grudges and disputes occupies an important position in Taoist rituals. The so-called grudges and disputes mainly refer to all kinds of interpersonal grudges and disputes in the world, which cause entanglements in the underworld and retribution in the human world. In Taoism, through rituals and talismans, grudges and disputes are resolved to seek the ascension of the spirits to immortality and peace in the human world. There are three lu (registers) and seven grades in Taoist rituals. The three lu refer to the The Golden Register Retreat, Jade Register Retreat and The Yellow Register Retreat. Resolving grudges and disputes all belong to the content of the Yellow Lu category. After the construction of the Yellow Lu Taoist altar, the grudges and disputes are resolved forever, ensuring safety and eliminating disasters for the living and the ascension of the deceased to the immortal realm.
Du Guangting, a Taoist priest of the Five Dynasties, was a master of Taoist rituals. The "Supreme Yellow Lu Established Rites" compiled by him contains a lot of content on resolving grudges and disputes. For example, in the "Morning Practice on the Path" it prays to all the saints "to erase the death record for the disciple, register the name for a new life, remove disasters and eliminate misfortunes, reconcile grudges and disputes, clear away the past flaws, and eliminate accumulated faults. Let the stars return to shine upon them, and let the years and fortune cease the penalties and conflicts." In the "Noon Practice on the Path" it states, "There are no records of faults on the earth, no oaths in the water, no grudges among ghosts, and no conspiracies among people. The movement of the stars has no ominous signs of shining upon them; the year of birth and fate has no faults of punishment and obstruction." These scriptures for resolving grudges and disputes are all expressed in the form of Taoist priests expressing and praying, requesting the forgiveness of the deities, and removing the grudges and disputes.
Another way of resolving grudges and disputes is to recite Taoist scriptures. There is a Taoist scripture called "The Supreme Taoist Lord's Wonderful Scripture on Resolving Grudges and Saving the Degraded". The content says that what the Supreme Taoist Lord saw at Jade Capital Mountain was that many ghosts were suffering in hell, all because they were disloyal, unkind, unmerciful, and unfilial in their previous lives and killed all living beings. Only by concentrating on tranquility, observing a vegetarian diet, and practicing the Tao, and reciting this scripture can the grudges be resolved and salvation achieved, and each can ascend to a higher realm. This is a simplified way, and the specific effect varies from person to person.
In addition to the previous two methods, there is also the use of talismans to resolve. Talismans are claimed to be one of the three treasures of Taoist priests and are particularly valued by them, and their functions are almost all-powerful. Therefore, they are also used in resolving grudges and disputes. In resolving grudges and disputes, talismans play a very significant role. In the "Lingbao Leading and Saving Golden Book - Standards of Talisman and Letters", there is the content of "Resolving All Kinds of Grudges and Disputes", many of which are targeted talismans, such as the Talisman for Resolving Grudges of Killing and Injuring, the Talisman for Resolving Grudges of Hanging Death, the Talisman for Resolving Grudges of Drowning Death, the Talisman for Resolving Grudges of Poisoning Death, the Talisman for Resolving Grudges of Childbirth Death, the Talisman for Resolving Grudges of Chronic Diseases, the Talisman for Resolving Grudges of Tomb Litigation, the Talisman for Resolving Grudges of Prison Death, the Talisman for Resolving Grudges of Evil Spirits, the Talisman for Resolving Grudges of Three Lifetimes. In addition, there are also the Talisman for Resolving Grudges and Disputes, the Talisman for Reconciling Grudges and Disputes, the Talisman for Resolving Curses, and the Talisman for Eradicating Sins and Resolving Grudges. These are specially written talismans for the "Ten Injuries" that Taoist priests consider the most difficult to resolve.
In the "Lingbao Jade Mirror" there is also the "Talisman for Resolving Grudges", the full name being the Lingbao Talisman for Resolving Grudges and Disputes and Ascending to Zhu Ling. The talisman contains eight characters such as "explaining grudges and disputes" and "ascending to Zhu Ling", claiming, "The divine talisman is proclaimed, resolving grudges and disputes, forever escaping from enmity, separating the confrontations, eliminating all disputes and causes, not generating evil deeds, leaving the cold court, and eradicating the roots of sins, just as proclaimed."
Chinese people attach great importance to moral cultivation. But people are not saints; who can be without faults? People inevitably make mistakes. To seek peace of mind, resolving grudges and disputes was born to meet people's needs. In fact, if you don't do bad things usually, you won't be afraid of ghosts knocking at the door at midnight. Heaven and earth have righteousness. As long as we cultivate our noble spirit well, how can there be grudges and disputes?
