Mystic Sovereign of Mount Heng, Primal Void of the Central Summit.
Master of Ten Thousand Spirits, Judge of Life and Death.
By the decree of Thunder, haste to this talisman!
Heed and Gather!
The ancients believed that each of the Five Great Mountains (Wuyue) was inhabited by a mountain deity, so they showed great reverence to these deities. During the Tang Dynasty, the mountain deities were enfeoffed as "Kings"; in the Song Dynasty, they were promoted to "Emperors"—a title still used today, such as the "Five Great Mountain Emperors" (Wuyue Dadi). Among them, the Eastern Mountain Emperor (Dongyue Dadi, associated with Mount Tai) wielded the greatest influence.

Based on the principles of the Five Directions, Five Elements, and Five Colors in traditional Chinese cosmology: the East belongs to the Wood element and corresponds to the color green; the South to the Fire element (red); the West to the Metal element (white); the North to the Water element (black); and the Central region to the Earth element (yellow). Consequently, the Eastern Mountain Emperor wears a green robe, the Northern Mountain Emperor a black robe, the Western Mountain Emperor a white robe, the Southern Mountain Emperor a red robe, and the Central Mountain Emperor a yellow robe.
Each mountain deity, as the divine ruler of their respective region, held not only regional administrative duties but also the authority to determine life and death. Taoists recited this incantation to summon the Five Great Mountain Deities for the purpose of ensuring peace in the mountains, prosperity of local produce, and good health for the mountain-dwelling people.
