The Beidi School, a branch of the Shangqing School, belongs to the Jinglü (Scripture and Talisman) tradition of Taoism.
During the Tang Dynasty, the Taoist priest Deng Ziyang recited the Tianpeng Mantra and was said to have received swordsmanship from the Northern Emperor (Beidi). He gained favor with Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, thus founding the Beidi School.

Deng Ziyang passed down his teachings to his son Deng Decheng, and later, Deng Yankang, Huang Dongyuan, Qu Tong, and He Yuantong continued to propagate its techniques. The Beidi School transmitted The Scripture of the Northern Emperor and the Seven Yuan Talismans of Beidi Huoluo, engaging in practices aimed at warding off evil spirits and dispelling misfortunes.
