The Wei Zheng 魏徽

The Wei Zheng 魏徽

Paul Peng
Wei Zheng (580-643) was a native of Qucheng in Julu (now part of Hebei Province) during the early Tang Dynasty, and his courtesy name was Xuancheng.
His father, Wei Changxian, once served as the magistrate of Tunliu County during the Northern Qi Dynasty.

In his youth, Wei Zheng lost his father and lived in poverty, but he had great aspirations. He did not pursue the career path of a Confucian scholar; instead, he became a Taoist priest. He was fond of reading and had an extensive knowledge and a good memory.

During the reign of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, Wei Zheng served as a Remonstrance Counselor and was famous for daring to offer admonitions to the emperor. His biography is included in both the Old Book of Tang and the New Book of Tang.
