Zhengyi Scripture of Methods: Rituals of Summoning with the Ten Talismans

Author unknown. Compiled approximately during the Northern and Southern Dynasties.

It is a one-scroll work included in the Zhengyi Section of the Daoist Canon.
Originally one of the fragmentary scrolls of Zhengyi Scripture of Methods—a classic text of Celestial Master Daoism—the book records ten types of early Celestial Master Daoist talismans, namely: the Red Talisman of Primordial Destiny, the Green Jia Talisman, the Red Jia Talisman, the Martial Jia Talisman, the Literary Jia Tally, the Sacred True Divine Talisman, the Central Compendium Talisman of the Yellow Chart, the Concurrent Official Talisman, the Red Talisman of the Yellow Chart, and the General’s Talisman of the Ninety Divisions for Males and Females. All these talismans follow a similar format, each specifying a person’s birth date and time (year, month, day and hour of birth) and the corresponding divine lord who shall summon them. For example, those born in the first lunar month are summoned by General Taishi; those born in the second lunar month by General Shangshi; those born in the Zi hour by Lord Xuanyuan Primordial Qi; those born in the Chou hour by Lord Taishi Primordial Qi, and so forth.

The book also contains the “Red Talisman Contract” and the “True Names of the Six Jia and the Sixty Celestial Stems”, which record the names, attire colors, governing domains and native places of the Five Directional Sage Generals and the Sixty Jiazi Gods residing in the human body.

This book is presumably used to summon divine beings for protection and to restrain the human soul.
