What is Heaven in Taoism?

In traditional Chinese thought, the concept of Heaven encompasses three core meanings:

  1. A personal deity;
  2. The natural world;
  3. An adjective describing that which bears inevitability.

What is Heaven in Taoism?

The notion of Heaven emerged in very ancient times. According to certain chapters of The Dao De Jing and relevant inscriptions on oracle bones from the Yin Ruins, it took shape during the Xia and Yin dynasties. Back then, Heaven was regarded as the supreme personal deity, the unseen ruler governing all affairs under heaven. Humans were merely instruments for Heaven to fulfill its will; the succession of ancient emperors and the rise and fall of dynasties were all acts of obeying Heaven’s mandate.

During the Spring and Autumn Period, constant disasters and upheavals gave rise to a wave of skepticism, challenging the concept of Heaven and spawning human-centric thoughts in opposition to the divine will of Heaven. The Book of Songs preserves numerous poems expressing doubt about Heaven’s mandate and yearning for a utopian land. Zichan contrasted "human way" with "the way of Heaven", putting forward the influential idea that "the way of Heaven is distant, while the human way is near". With the passage of history, the thought of emphasizing human affairs and downplaying the way of Heaven further developed.

Confucius was a transitional figure in the evolution of the concept of Heaven. On the one hand, he held that Heaven was the supreme arbiter of human affairs, whose will could not be defied. On the other hand, he also conceived of Heaven as natural Heaven—the natural world where the four seasons alternate and all things are born and transformed. Mozi advocated revering Heaven and serving ghosts and gods, taking a retro stance toward Heaven and affirming its existence as a personal deity.

From the Daoist school to Xunzi, the idea of Heaven as a deity gradually faded. Xunzi championed the belief that "man can conquer Heaven", defining Heaven purely as the natural world: the fixed stars revolve in their courses, the sun and moon shine in turn, the four seasons govern in succession, and Yin and Yang undergo great transformations. This conception of Heaven as the natural world was fully elaborated and proven.

The Daoist school regarded Heaven as the natural world, while in Taoism, besides natural Heaven, the personal deity of Heaven is also venerated. Neo-Confucian scholars of the Song Dynasty explored the distinction between heavenly principle and human desire, endowing Heaven with a new meaning—it refers to an objectively inevitable existence with ethical attributes, an embodiment of the ultimate operation of The Dao in the mortal world.
