Quanzhen Dao and Zhengyi Dao in the Yuan Dynasty

Faced with the same issues of ethnic cultural differences and ethnic integration, the Yuan Dynasty inherited the Jin Dynasty's attitude towards Taoism. With the support of the rulers, Taoism prospered in the Yuan Dynasty. However, this prosperity differed from that of the Sui and Tang dynasties: it was not characterized by the enrichment of doctrines and teachings, but by the convergence of new and old sects in terms of organizational structure. This trend of convergence among new and old sects formed a pattern where the north was represented by Quanzhen Dao and the south was centered on Zhengyi Dao.
Quanzhen Dao and Zhengyi Dao in the Yuan Dynasty
  1. Quanzhen Dao in the North
When Genghis Khan was still leading his army on a western expedition, he lost no time in dispatching envoys to Dengzhou to summon Qiu Chuji, the then leader of Quanzhen Dao. Qiu Chuji, who had previously refused invitations from both the Jin and Song dynasties, was observing the situation in Shandong. Upon receiving Genghis Khan's summons, he spared no effort to travel thousands of miles with his disciples to the Western Regions to answer the call. After meeting Genghis Khan, Qiu Chuji actively offered strategies for unifying the world, thus gaining special favor and laying the foundation for the great development of Quanzhen Dao in the Yuan Dynasty.Quanzhen Dao and Zhengyi Dao in the Yuan Dynasty
  2. Zhengyi Dao in the South
Before Kublai Khan, Emperor Shizu of the Yuan Dynasty, conquered the Southern Song Dynasty, he followed Genghis Khan's example of showing respect to Qiu Chuji by sending secret envoys to Longhu Mountain to secretly seek talismans and divine orders from Zhang Keda, the 35th Heavenly Master. Since then, Longhu Mountain established close ties with the ruling authorities of the dynasty. After the founding of the Yuan Dynasty, from Zhang Zongyan, the 36th Heavenly Master, to Zhang Zhengyan, the 41st Heavenly Master, all were honored by the Yuan royal family, granted the title of "True Man," respectfully called "Heavenly Master," and appointed to oversee Taoism in the south. They received unprecedented respect, marking a period of significant development for the Celestial Master Taoism of Longhu Mountain. The leading position of the successive Heavenly Masters of Longhu Mountain was continuously consolidated. By the mid to late Yuan Dynasty, the Longhu Sect, led by the Heavenly Master, gradually became the core of Taoism in the south. Other Taoist talisman sects gradually integrated around it, eventually forming a major Taoist sect—Zhengyi Dao.
