Celebrating the Birthday of Zixu Yuanjun — Lady Wei Huacun 魏华存

Early Life and Spiritual Calling
Lady Wei, personal name Huacun, courtesy name Xian’an, was born in Rencheng, Yanzhou (present-day Shandong Province) in the fourth year of the Jiaping reign of Cao Wei — 252 CE. She was the daughter of Wei Shu, Grand Counselor (Situ) of the Western Jin dynasty, who was already forty-four years old at the time of her birth.
Growing up in Luoyang under her father’s household, Lady Wei received an exceptional classical education. From an early age she was drawn to the writings of Laozi, Zhuangzi, and the Hundred Schools of Thought. Even as a child she embraced the teachings of the Celestial Masters (Tianshi) tradition, practicing stillness and inner cultivation. As she matured, her devotion to the Tao deepened steadily. She practiced Taoist breathing and nourishing-life (yangsheng) techniques daily, and repeatedly sought permission to leave home for a secluded retreat — a request her parents refused. Undeterred, she found a quiet corner of the family residence and continued her practice there.
Marriage, Motherhood, and the Descent of the Scriptures
At the age of twenty-four, Lady Wei was wed by her parents to Liu Wen (courtesy name Youyan) of Nanyang. The marriage produced two sons: the elder named Pu, and the younger named Xia. Throughout these years, her inner devotion to the Tao never wavered. Once her sons were grown, she separated from her husband and retreated to a fasting chamber to pursue her practice in earnest.
Her sincerity and perseverance moved Heaven itself. The Celestial Emperor dispatched divine emissaries to descend and transmit the Shangqing scriptures to her directly.
The Perfected of the Clear Void, Wang Bao, arrived at the head of a company of immortals and addressed her: “You have cultivated the Tao with such diligence and hardship. By command of the Great Emperor of Fusang, we are here to transmit to you the Way of the Divine Perfected.” A jade maiden then opened a jade casket and presented the Shangqing Zhenjing — thirty-one scrolls of the Supreme Clarity True Scriptures — saying: “I once studied the Tao in secret, received these precious scriptures from the Lady of the South Pole and the Lord of the Western Citadel, and through recitation and practice attained the rank of Perfected. I now hold the position of Immortal King of the Cavern-Heaven of the Lesser Existence. What I transmit to you today is that very same text.”
Wang Bao then transmitted the essential precepts and oral instructions drawn from the scriptures one by one. Thereafter, the Perfected of Jinglin transmitted to Lady Wei the Huangjing Neijing Jing (Scripture of the Inner Landscape of the Yellow Court), instructing her to recite it day and night. After ten thousand recitations, it was said, one could perceive spirits and ghosts directly, harmonize the three hun-souls and five po-souls, and attain long life and undying vision. When the transmission was complete, the assembly of immortals dissolved into invisibility and departed.
Southward Journey and the Founding of the Shangqing Lineage
Lady Wei cultivated the Tao in Luoyang for many years, reaching a high level of attainment. After her husband Liu Wen passed away and famine swept across the Central Plains, she gave generously to the poor and hungry. Guided by a divine sign from the Perfected, she took her two sons and crossed the Yangtze River, journeying south.
The road was fraught with bandits and marauders, yet wherever Lady Wei traveled, she passed through unharmed — danger turning to safety at every turn. Upon arriving in the south, her elder son Liu Pu rose to become Governor of Ancheng, and her younger son Liu Xia served as a senior aide to the Grand Commandant. With her sons established, Lady Wei was at last free to dwell in pure fasting and quiet cultivation. Her practice advanced day by day, and she began transmitting the Tao — opening the lineage of the Shangqing school of inner cultivation.
The Huangjing Jing and the Shangqing School
The Shangqing school centers its practice on the cultivation of jing (essence), qi (vital breath), and shen (spirit), integrating medicine and immortal cultivation into a unified system of stillness practice. To make the Shangqing methods accessible and enduring, Lady Wei revised, annotated, and compiled a definitive edition of the Huangjing Neijing Jing, which was then copied and circulated throughout the world.
This definitive text — also known simply as the Huangjing Jing (Scripture of the Yellow Court) — stands as one of the most important classics in the entire Taoist canon. Written in seven-character verse, it describes the functions of the body’s organs and viscera, using the Three Cinnabar Fields (san dantian) and the Yellow Court Palace as its central axis. Through visualization of the Yellow Court and cultivation of the Cinnabar Fields, the practitioner accumulates essence and qi in pursuit of long life.
In the ninth year of the Chenghe reign of Emperor Cheng of Eastern Jin — 334 CE — after completing the three scrolls of the Huangjing Waijing Jing (Scripture of the Outer Landscape of the Yellow Court), Lady Wei was received by a host of immortals sent by the Queen Mother of the West and ascended to Heaven.
Ascension and Divine Title
On the day of her ascension, a company of immortals arrived at the “Ritual Altar of the Dipper” (Lidou Tan) before the temple, riding crane-drawn carriages to welcome her. The great Tang poet Du Fu alluded to this scene in his poem Gazing at the Sacred Peak: “With reverence for Lady Wei, the host of immortals soared and circled.”
“Zixu Yuanjun, Supreme Sovereign of the True Ones,
Director of Destinies, Lady of the Southern Sacred Peak”
紫虚元君领上真司命南岳夫人
Together with the Queen Mother of the West (Xi Wangmu), she governs the immortal cavern-heavens of Mount Tiantai, Mount Gou, Mount Wangwu, Mount Dahuo, and the Southern Sacred Peak of Mount Heng.
Her legacy endures across the centuries — in the scriptures she compiled, the lineage she founded, and the devotion of countless practitioners who honor her on this auspicious day. Explore more of the Shangqing scriptural tradition to deepen your understanding of this profound lineage.
