Tao Te Ching Chapter 24

企者不立;跨者不行;自见者不明;自是者不彰;自伐者无功;自矜者不长。其在道也,曰:余食赘行。物或恶之，故有道者不处。
He who stands on his tiptoes does not stand firm; he who stretches his legs does not walk (easily).(So),he who displays himself does not shine; he who asserts his own viewsis not distinguished;he who vaunts himself does not find his merit acknowledged; he who is self-conceited has nosuperiority allowed to him. Such conditions, viewed fromthe standpoint of the Dao，are like remnants of food, or atumour on the body, which all dislike. Hence those who pursue (the course) of the Dao do not adopt and allow them.
【译文】跳起脚尖反而不能长久的站立，迈起大步反而不能走得更远。过分突显自己的，声名反而不能远扬;自以为是的，反而得不到显昭;自我夸耀的，反而不能建立功业;自高自大的,反而不能做众人之长。从道的角度看,以上这些急躁炫耀的行为，只能说是剩饭赘瘤。因为它们是令人厌恶的东西,所以有道的人决不这样做。
Translation:
On tiptoe, one cannot stand long; taking big strides, one cannot walk far.
Those who overly flaunt themselves will not have their reputation spread far;
those who are self-righteous will not be clearly recognized;
those who boast will not sustain their achievements;
those who are arrogant will not lead others.
From the perspective of the Tao, such hasty and showy behaviors are nothing but leftovers and tumors.
Because they are detestable, those who follow the Tao will never act this way.
