The Nine Heavens Three Mao Rites

The author is unknown.

It was probably compiled in the late Yuan Dynasty or early Ming Dynasty.
Consisting of one scroll, it is included in the Weiyi (Rituals and Etiquette) category of The Dongzhen Section in the Daoist Canon.

As one of the Taoist lamp rituals, this text is used for praying for disaster elimination, blessings, life protection, and immortality. Practitioners light lamps to worship the Three Mao True Lords, submit their devotion, and pay homage, thereby seeking to alleviate misfortunes, obtain blessings, and preserve life to attain longevity.

The Three Mao True Lords are:

  • True Lord of the Supreme Mysterious Dao, Pure Emptiness, Holy Protection, and Director of Destinies, Upper Minister of the Eastern Yue (Mao Ying);
  • True Lord of the Ultimate Dao, Pure Tranquility, Virtuous Protection, and Wonderful Response, Guardian of Fixed Official Fortune and Right Prohibition (Mao Gu);
  • True Lord of the Subtle Mysterious Dao, Pure Benevolence, Kind Protection, and Divine Response, Protector of Life for the Three Officials (Mao Zhong).

These honorific titles were bestowed upon the Three Mao True Lords during the Yanyou reign period of Emperor Renzong of the Yuan Dynasty.
