Zhu Huang was a native of Guangling. As a young man, he suffered from a parasite illness and went to the Daoist master Ruan Qiu on Sui Mountain for treatment. Ruan Qiu took pity on him and said: "If you can eliminate the three worms in your abdomen, you will be capable of attaining the cultivation of a True Person and thus worthy of instruction." Huang said: "Once my illness is cured, I will serve as your guest for thirty years and dare not return." Ruan Qiu gave Huang seven medicinal substances, which he took nine pills of each day. After a hundred days, several dou of matter were expelled from his body. After being nurtured for dozens of days, he became plump and strong, and his mind grew more open and enlightened. He was given Laojun's Huangjing Jing and instructed to read it three times a day — a practice central to Taoist inner cultivation through scripture recitation. After mastering it, he could contemplate its meaning. Ruan Qiu then went with Huang into the Yuniu Temple on Fuyang Mountain. After nearly eighty years, when he returned to his old home, the white hairs had turned black again and he had grown more than three chi of new hair — a vivid sign of Taoist immortal renewal. He stopped by his family's house for a meal and left after several years. In this manner, he remained until the end of Emperor Wu's reign.
