Baogao of the Celestial Master Zhang Daoling: Sacred Hymns & Commentary
Paul PengShare
☯️ The Baogao (宝诰), or "Precious Proclamation," is one of the most solemn liturgical forms in Taoism — a hymn of praise recited before the divine image of a deity or patriarch. The two Baogao presented here honor Zhang Daoling (张道陵), the First Celestial Master (祖天师) and founder of the Zhengyi Mengwei Dao (正一盟威道) in the Eastern Han dynasty. These texts are central to the Zhengyi (正一派) tradition and are still chanted in Taoist ceremonies at Longhu Mountain today. 🏮

【Commentary I】Verse-by-Verse Explanation 📜
🏮 1. The Ancestral Celestial Master (祖天师): Zhang Daoling (张道陵), also known as Zhang Ling, courtesy name Fuhan, was born in the 10th year of Emperor Guangwu's Jianwu reign (34 CE) in Feng County, Pei Commandery of the Eastern Han dynasty — a descendant of Zhang Liang (张子房), the renowned strategist of the Han dynasty. Before his birth, his mother dreamed of the Kuixing star descending, and she conceived. He was precocious: at age seven he had already mastered the Tao Te Ching (道德经) and the River Chart and Luo Writing (河洛之书). He later renounced official life to pursue the Tao. In Sichuan, where indigenous shamanic cults (巫教) had long exploited the people, Zhang Daoling — accompanied by disciples Wang Chang and Zhao Sheng — subdued the demonic forces, slew the corrupt shamans, and founded the Zhengyi Mengwei Dao (正一盟威道). This Baogao belongs to the Zhengyi (正一派) tradition, distinct from the Quanzhen (全真派) school.
🌿 2. Supreme Minister of the Profound Mystery, Upholder of the Three Heavens (泰玄上相,扶教三天): Taixuan (泰玄) refers to the profound and mysterious principles of the Tao. Shangxiang (上相) is an honorific for a prime minister. The Three Heavens (三天) refer to the Qingwei Heaven (清微天), Yuyu Heaven (禹馀天), and Dachi Heaven (大赤天) — the realms of the Three Pure Ones (三清).
☯️ 3. Heming Mountain & Longhu Altar (鹤鸣山上得真传,龙虎玄坛留妙诀): The Supreme Lord Lao (太上老君) descended upon Heming Mountain (鹤鸣山) and conferred upon Zhang Daoling the title of Celestial Master. In the 1st year of Emperor Shundi's Yongshou reign (Eastern Han), Zhang founded the Zhengyi Mengwei Dao at Heming Mountain. He had previously built an altar at Yunji Mountain (云锦山) to refine the divine elixir; after three years the elixir was complete and a dragon and tiger appeared — hence the mountain was renamed Longhu Mountain (龙虎山). Xuantan (玄坛) means a protective ritual altar.
📜 4. Three Caverns' Registers (三洞法箓,诸品灵文): The Three Caverns (三洞) are the Dongtrue (洞真), Dongxuan (洞玄), and Dongshen (洞神) — the three great scriptural divisions of the Taoist Canon. Falu (法箓) are the ritual registers used to summon divine officers and perform rites.
🏮 5. One Thousand Two Hundred Divine Officers (一千二百之官军,匡扶正教): After receiving the scriptures from the Supreme Lord Lao, Zhang Daoling could summon 36,000 divine spirits and 1,200 divine officers to serve the Orthodox Teaching.
🌿 6. Twenty-Four Grades of Secret Registers (二十四品秘箓,普度后人): These refer to the Zhengyi Mengwei Twenty-Four Grades of Ritual Registers (正一盟威二十四品法箓) bestowed by the Supreme Lord Lao, used to universally save later generations.
☯️ 7. Dugong Jade Seal & Official Vestments (都功玉印,官服群履): The Sanwu Dugong Jade Seal (三五都功玉印) and other ritual implements were bestowed by the Supreme Lord Lao. The official vestments include the flat-top crown (平顶冠), Eight Trigrams robe (八卦衣), square skirt (方裙), and vermilion shoes (朱履) — signifying the immense responsibility of the Celestial Master.
📜 8–9. Governing the Three Realms & Wielding the Paired Swords (居都省而常侍上帝…雌雄二剑,诛斩妖精): The Three Realms (三界) are Heaven, Earth, and Humanity. The yin-yang paired swords (雌雄二剑) were bestowed by the Supreme Lord Lao, symbolizing the Celestial Master's supreme power to subdue demons, summon rain, and command thunder and lightning. ⚡
🏮 10–11. Ascension in Broad Daylight (功成行满,白日飞升): In the 1st year of the Jian'an reign (156 CE), Zhang Daoling ascended to immortality in broad daylight at Yuntai Mountain (云台山) together with his disciples Wang Chang and Zhao Sheng, and his wife Lady Yong. In the 4th year of Emperor Xizong's Zhonghe reign of the Tang dynasty (884 CE), he was enfeoffed as "Great Dharma Celestial Master of the Three Heavens" (三天扶教大法师).
🌿 12–13. Imperial Titles (辅玄体道…六合无穷高明上帝): The Southern Song Emperor Lizong added the title "Supreme Dharma Master Who Assists the Mysterious and Embodies the Tao, True Lord of Zhengyi Jingying Manifestly Protective" (三天扶教辅元大法师,正一靖应显佑真君). The Ming Emperor Chongzhen further bestowed the title "Boundless in the Six Directions, Illustrious Supreme Emperor" (六合无穷高明上帝). The Taoist community honors him as "Great Sage Demon-Subduing Tao-Protecting Heavenly Worthy" (大圣降魔护道天尊). ☯️
As the Celestial Master tradition teaches, the Baogao is not merely a hymn — it is a living covenant between the practitioner and the divine, renewed with every sincere recitation. 🪷
⚡ For practitioners who wish to deepen their connection to the protective power of the Celestial Master's thunder authority, the Five Thunder Plaque (五雷号令令牌) is a sacred ritual implement rooted in the Zhengyi tradition. Consecrated according to the rites of the Celestial Master's lineage, it embodies the commanding power of heaven's thunder — the same force invoked in the Baogao above. Whether displayed on an altar or carried as a protective talisman, it serves as a tangible link to the thunder authority of Zhang Daoling himself. 🏮

【Commentary II】Verse-by-Verse Explanation 📜
🏮 1. The Ancestral Celestial Master (祖天师): Zhang Daoling, the First Celestial Master, was born in Feng County, Pei Commandery (today's Feng County, Jiangsu) on the 15th night of the 1st month of the 10th year of Emperor Guangwu's Jianwu reign (34 CE), at Tianmu Mountain in Wu. He was a descendant of Zhang Liang (张子房), the Han dynasty strategist. After mastering Laozi's teachings, he served briefly as Prefect of Baijun Jiangzhou (today's Chongqing), then renounced office to pursue the Tao. With disciple Wang Chang, he traveled from the Huai River into Jiangxi's Poyang Lake, then upstream to Yunji Mountain (云锦山, today's Longhu Mountain), where he refined the Nine Heavens Divine Elixir (九天神丹). After three years the elixir was complete and a dragon and tiger appeared — the mountain was renamed accordingly. Hearing that the people of Sichuan were simple and receptive to moral teaching, he entered Sichuan and settled at Heming Mountain (鹤鸣山) to cultivate the Tao. In the 1st year of Emperor Shundi's Jian'an reign (142 CE), he received from the Supreme Lord Lao the Zhengyi Mengwei Dao (正一盟威之道), founding Taoism as an organized religion. He is revered by the Taoist community as the Ancestral Celestial Master (祖天师). Baogao (宝诰) is a literary form of eulogy used to praise and honor.
🌿 2. Originally from the Southern Lands, Tracing Back to Shu (本来南土,上溯蜀都): Zhang Daoling was born in the south (Wu's Tianmu Mountain), hence "originally from the southern lands." Shu (蜀) refers to the ancient Shu Kingdom, later the Qin commandery of Shu, centered on Chengdu (Sichuan). Zhang Daoling retreated to Heming Mountain in Sichuan to cultivate the Tao, hence "tracing back to the Shu capital."
☯️ 3. The Yellow Emperor's Nine Cauldrons Elixir Scripture (先获黄帝九鼎之丹书): In the 2nd year of Emperor Hedi's Yongyuan reign (90 CE), Zhang Daoling and disciple Wang Chang traveled to Yunji Mountain. One day Zhang said to Wang: "The Five Sacred Mountains have many immortals; the Three Shu regions have famous mountains — shall we not travel together?" They journeyed north to Mount Song (嵩山), where after years of concentrated meditation a silk-robed envoy appeared and told them that the stone chamber of the central peak contained the Shang Sanhuang Neiwen (上三皇内文) and the Huangdi Jiuding Taiqing Danjing (黄帝九鼎太清丹经). After seven days of fasting and purification, they entered the chamber and found the scripture — this is the "Yellow Emperor's Nine Cauldrons Elixir Scripture." 📜
🏮 4. Attending the Old Lord Twice at the Jade Bureau (后侍老君两度于玉局): The Jade Bureau (玉局) refers to the Jade Bureau Precinct (玉局治), the seventh of the twenty-four precincts in the "lower grade human precincts" category, located south of Chengdu. According to the Peng Cheng Ji (彭乘记): "In the 1st year of Emperor Shundi's Yongshou reign of the Han dynasty, the Old Lord Li descended with Zhang Daoling to this place. A jade couch with bureau-style legs rose from the ground of its own accord; the Old Lord ascended the seat and expounded the Southern and Northern Dipper Scripture (南斗北斗经) for Zhang Daoling. When he departed, the seat sank back into the earth, forming a cavern — hence the name Jade Bureau." This verse refers to the Supreme Lord Lao descending twice to expound scriptures for Zhang Daoling.
🌿 5. A Thousand Scrolls & the Art of Breathing (千轴得修真之要,一时成吐纳之功): "A thousand scrolls" refers to the scriptures bestowed by the Supreme Lord Lao. Xiuzhen (修真) means cultivating the Tao. Tuna (吐纳) — "exhaling and inhaling" — is the Taoist breathing practice of expelling stale qi and absorbing fresh qi, believed to sustain life and achieve immortality. This verse means that after receiving the Yellow Emperor's elixir scripture and the Supreme Lord Lao's bestowed texts, Zhang Daoling grasped the essentials of cultivation and perfected the breathing arts. ☯️
📜 6. Ritual Registers Fully Accomplished (法箓全成,受盟威品而结璘诀): Fa (法) refers to Taoist methods; as Song dynasty master Bai Yuchan's Nine Essentials of Taoist Methods (道法九要) states: "The Dharma is to thoroughly understand the transformations of yin and yang, to clearly comprehend the mechanisms of ghosts and spirits, to summon wind and thunder, to pray for clear skies and rain, to perform talismans and consecrate water, to heal illness and expel evil, to accumulate conduct and merit, and to unite with the Tao in truth." Lu (箓), also called falu (法箓) or baolu (宝箓), is a Taoist register-document serving as the credential for entering the Tao and the basis for performing rites. The Mengwei grade (盟威品) refers to the Zhengyi Mengwei Register (正一盟威箓), bestowed by the Old Lord and transmitted through Zhang Daoling. The Chisongzi Zhangli (赤松子章历) records: "The Supreme Lord, out of compassion, descended to Heming Mountain and bestowed upon Celestial Master Zhang the Zhengyi Mengwei Talisman Registers of 120 grades, along with 1,200 divine officer rites, 200 great petitions, and secret dharma texts, to save humanity." 🏮
🌿 7. Distinguishing Orthodox from Heterodox (正邪两辨,夺福庭治而化咸泉): The Supreme Lord Lao bestowed upon Zhang Daoling the Zhengyi Mengwei Dao with its prohibitions and regulations, to examine the people's compliance and transgressions, blessings and misfortunes, merits and faults. Futing (福庭) refers to the Blessed Court — specifically the Yangping Precinct (阳平治), the central administrative district among the twenty-four precincts. Its "Yangping Precinct Dugong Seal" (阳平治都功印) is the supreme ritual seal of the Celestial Master Taoism bestowed by the Supreme Lord Lao. Xianquan (咸泉, salt spring water) metaphorically refers to the virtue of Zhang Daoling in establishing Taoism to transform and educate the people.
☯️ 8. Virtue Perfected in the Great Elixir, Tao Equal to the Seven Luminaries (德就大丹,道齐七政): "Virtue perfected in the Great Elixir" refers to the appearance of the dragon and tiger when Zhang Daoling's elixir was complete at Yunji Mountain. In the early Yongyuan years, Zhang Daoling and disciple Wang Chang arrived at Yunji Mountain to refine the Nine Heavens Divine Elixir: in the first year a red light illuminated the chamber; in the second year five-colored clouds covered the cauldron, and at night a green dragon and white tiger each circled the cauldron; in the third year the elixir was complete and the dragon and tiger appeared — the mountain was named accordingly. The Seven Luminaries (七政) are the Sun, Moon, and the five planets (Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Saturn). This verse means Zhang Daoling's Tao was equal in grandeur to the celestial luminaries. 📜
🏮 9. Great Compassion, Great Vow, Great Sagacity, Great Kindness (大悲大愿,大圣大慈): Dabei (大悲) means compassion for all beings. Dayuan (大愿) means the great vow to save all sentient beings. Dasheng (大圣) means transcendent wisdom and numinous penetration. Daci (大慈) means loving protection of all beings. These four phrases praise the supreme virtue of the Ancestral Celestial Master.
🌿 10–11. Three Heavens & Thunder Bureau (三天扶教,辅玄体道 / 大法天师,雷霆都省): The Three Heavens (三天) refer to the Qingwei, Yuyu, and Dachi Heavens — the realms of the Three Pure Ones. Fujiao (扶教) means to uphold and assist Taoism. Xuan (玄) is the Tao itself; tidao (体道) means to embody and attain the Tao. "Great Dharma Celestial Master" (大法天师) is one of Zhang Daoling's divine titles. "Thunder Bureau" (雷霆) refers to Heaven's commands; Dusheng (都省) is a celestial official rank — signifying that the Celestial Master issues Heaven's commands on behalf of the divine. ⚡
☯️ 12–14. Imperial Titles & Final Honors (泰玄上相…降魔护道天尊): "Supreme Minister of the Profound Mystery, Grand Dharma Lord of All Heaven" (泰玄上相,都天大法主) is Zhang Daoling's celestial title. "Zhengyi Chongxuan Divinely Transforming Quietly Responsive Manifestly Protective True Lord" (正一冲玄神化静应显佑真君) was the title conferred by Emperor Chengzong of the Yuan dynasty. "Boundless in the Six Directions Illustrious Great Emperor" (六合无穷高明大帝) was bestowed by the Ming Emperor Chongzhen. Jiangmo (降魔) means subduing demons; hudao (护道) means protecting the Tao; Tianzun (天尊) is the honorific for an immortal who has attained the Tao. These final verses are the ultimate praise of the supreme virtue of Zhang Daoling. 🪷

🪷 The legacy of Zhang Daoling lives on not only in scripture and ceremony, but in the sacred objects that carry his lineage's protective power. Among the most revered is the Marshal Yin Pendant (殷元帅太岁符) — a talisman invoking the authority of Marshal Yin (殷元帅), one of the great protective generals of the Zhengyi tradition. Worn or enshrined, it channels the same guardian force that Zhang Daoling wielded to subdue demons and protect the faithful across the Three Realms. For those who walk the path of the Celestial Master, this pendant is a living seal of that ancient covenant. ☯️
