Overview of Daoist Neidan (Internal Alchemy) 道教内丹术

Neidan is an important cultivation method in Taoism. It is based on the philosophical ideas of "harmony between man and nature" and "correspondence between man and nature," which hold that "the human body is a microcosm of the universe." Neidan involves cultivating one's "xing" (nature/essence) and "ming" (life/destiny), using the human body as a cauldron and furnace to refine "jing" (essence), "qi" (vital energy), and "shen" (spirit) to form an "inner elixir" within the body. The goal is to strengthen the body, enhance human life functions, and even achieve the state of "becoming an immortal."

The classic TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) text Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) records the cultivation realms of "zhenren" (true men), "zhiren" (perfect men), and "shengren" (sages). It also describes cultivation and healing methods such as "governing the universe, mastering yin and yang, breathing in vital energy, preserving the spirit independently, unifying the muscles as one," "keeping the spirit undispersed," "accumulating essence to perfect the spirit," and "transforming essence to alter energy." Among these, "transforming essence to alter energy" can be seen as a precursor to methods in later Neidan studies, such as "refining essence into qi" and "refining qi into spirit."

Laozi, the representative of the pre-Qin Taoist school, put forward the theory of internal cultivation in his work Tao Te Ching, including breathing techniques like "either exhaling gently or inhaling slowly" and "maintaining a continuous and subtle flow of breath as if it exists." He also expounded on the ideal of "long life and eternal vision." The Zhuangzi also contains internal cultivation methods such as "xinzhai" (heart fasting) and "zuowang" (sitting in forgetfulness).
