What is Cultivating the Spirit 存神
Paul PengShare
The Cultivating the Spirit, also known as "Cun Shen," refers to various "spirits" that reside within the human body and between heaven and earth. In addition to believing that "spirits are born from within" like humans, with characteristics such as length, shape, color, dwelling place, and name, Taoism also believes that the spirits of heaven and earth can enter the human body and gather into "body spirits." These "body spirits" can also travel outside the body.

Through mental intention, one can internally observe the "body spirit" guarding a certain part of the body, while also being able to attract "external spirits" to settle inside the body, opening the gate of life and closing the door of death. The effects include calming the soul and controlling the will, regulating the body, eliminating disasters and curing diseases, and extending lifespan; on a higher level, it leads to heavenly immortals coming to guide, flying through the void, or ascending to heaven during the day to become immortal and never die.
