Spell for Resolving Grievances and Entanglements

May Heaven resolve, may Earth resolve,

Yin resolve, Yang resolve,

May the grudges of past-life parents be resolved.

May the entanglements of curses from seven ancestral generations and eight generations of past foes be resolved.

Spell for Resolving Grievances and Entanglements

May the entanglements of curses from living parents and kin be resolved.

May those who owe lives be resolved.

May those who owe karmic debts be resolved.

May romantic grudges, secret trysts, and lingering resentments be resolved.

May all curses and oaths—uttered before the kitchen stove, before gods and Buddhas,

complaining of wrongs in life and death, swearing oaths for oneself—be resolved.

May the entanglements from mountain caves,

malignant spirits and hungry ghosts,

fairies and demonic conceptions be resolved.

May the karmic entanglements from the Blood Lake, Gorge Stone,

thirty-six officials and seventy-two functionaries of the netherworld,

accumulated through kalpas of bondage and confrontation, be resolved.

What is resolved and what is yet unresolved—

let all be swiftly resolved,

speedily resolved.

If you do not resolve them,

when the hour passes and the time is late,

disobeying the decree and violating the talisman,

the iron-faced Thunder God will show no mercy.

Your demonic forms shall be destroyed,

your demonic essences cut off.

The Thunder Ax shall cleave you,

grind you to ashes and smash you to bits.

Swiftly, swiftly, in accordance with the law and decree.

Note: This incantation is from Taishang Sandong Shenzhou (Divine Incantations of the Three Caverns of the Most High), collected in Daozang, Vol. 2.

In Chapter 43 of Great Rites of the Upper Clarity and Numinous Treasure by Wang Qizhen of the Song Dynasty:

“Humans in the world often harm other beings through impetuous minds, or owe lives and wealth, accumulating various karmic enmities. This leads to entanglement in netherworld lawsuits, with no way to transcend. Having received heavenly grace to be liberated and guided, yet bitter resentments remain. To avoid chaos when spirits encounter one another, one should use talismans and scripts according to the ritual method to resolve them case by case, turning their hearts toward the The Dao, untying knots and reconciling enmities, so that all may ascend to the blissful realm together.”

The term karmic enmity mainly refers to all kinds of interpersonal grudges in the world, which cause entanglement in netherworld lawsuits, bonds between the living and the dead, suffering of ghosts, and retribution in the human world.

In Ritual of Universal Salvation and Refinement through the Primordial Offering, human karmic grudges are summarized as the Ten Injuries:

killing by violence, hanging, drowning, poisoning, death in childbirth, lingering illness, tomb curses, death in prison, demonic harm, and accumulated lifetimes of wrongs.

Among them, “accumulated lifetimes of wrongs” refers to the continuation of interpersonal grudges that “may be escaped in the human world but must bind one underground”; “demonic harm” refers to non-interpersonal karmic bonds.

As for methods to resolve karmic enmity, besides praying for divine forgiveness, one may also use talismans, scripts, incantations and other arts. With single-minded stillness, chanting this incantation can untie enmities and liberate beings: ghosts ascend to immortality, the living enjoy peace, and all attain transcendence.
