What is the timetable of the twelve Earthly Branches?
Share
The Earthly Branches refer to the twelve divisions of Jupiter's orbit. In ancient China, Jupiter was used for chronological reckoning, so Jupiter was also called the "Year Star". The orbital period of Jupiter is approximately 12 years, so its orbit was divided into 12 parts. Later, these 12 parts were named, and these are the "Earthly Branches". The Earthly Branches are Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, and Hai respectively.
The Earthly Branches are often used in combination with the Heavenly Stems. With a cycle of 60, they can be used to record years, months, days, and hours. The so-called "Eight Characters of Birth Time" refers to the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches of the year, month, day, and hour of one's birth, totaling eight characters, hence the name. When using the Earthly Branches to record years, each Earthly Branch corresponds to an animal sign, also known as a zodiac animal. The twelve zodiac animals are: Rat for Zi, Ox for Chou, Tiger for Yin, Rabbit for Mao, Dragon for Chen, Snake for Si, Horse for Wu, Sheep for Wei, Monkey for Shen, Rooster for You, Dog for Xu, and Pig for Hai.
In addition, traditional Chinese medicine also uses the twelve Earthly Branches to correspond to the internal organs of the human body. Yin corresponds to the gallbladder, Mao to the liver, Si to the heart, Wu to the small intestine, Chen and Xu to the stomach, Chou and Wei to the spleen, Shen to the large intestine, You to the lungs, Hai to the kidneys and pericardium, and Zi to the bladder and triple energizer.
