Bai Yuchan's Treasure Chapter 道德宝章

A commentary on the Laozi.

Composed by Ge Changgeng of the Southern Song Dynasty. It is one volume. There was once a block-printed edition based on Zhao Mengfu’s handwriting, which was included in the Siku Quanshu (Complete Library of the Four Treasuries) of the Qing Dynasty.

Bai Yuchan's Treasure Chapter

The edition published by Chen Jiru of the Ming Dynasty renamed it Chan Xian Jie Lao (Immortal Toad’s Commentary on the Laozi). All annotations are marked alongside the text; it does not explain words and phrases philologically, nor does it make extended inferences and elaborations—the annotations are even shorter than the scriptural text. The Annotated Bibliography of the Siku Quanshu comments that "its language and meaning are mostly similar to Chan gathas". The connotations of certain phrases and the writing style in the annotations are indeed similar to Chan Buddhism, reflecting Bai Yuchan’s tendency to integrate Chan thought from a Taoist perspective.

This book had no printed editions for a long time.

The *Zang Wai Dao Shu (Daoist Texts Outside the Daozang)* includes the version from the Siku Quanshu, as well as the Chan Xian Jie Lao published by Chen Jiru.
