Biographies of Nine Nanyue Perfected
The version in the Daozang is included in the Genealogy and Records category of the The Dongxuan Section. In the preface written by the author at the beginning of the volume, it states: Ouyang Daolong, a Taoist Priest, presented the family-preserved Biographies of the Nine Immortals of Nanyue to Liao Xian and requested him to write a preface. Liao Xian then eliminated redundant content and corrected errors in the text to compile this biography. The book details the deeds of nine Taoist Priest's—Chen Xingming, Shi Cun, Yin Daoquan, Xu Lingqi, Chen Huidu, Zhang Xuan'yao, Zhang Shizhen, Wang Lingyu and Deng Yuzhi—who cultivated the The Dao and attained immortality on Mount Heng of Nanyue during the Six Dynasties period, with clear notes on their courtesy names, ancestral hometowns and the dates of their ascension to immortality. At the end of the book, it is mentioned that a palace was built in later generations at the place where the Nine True Immortals attained immortality. In the Xiantong reign period of the Tang Dynasty (860~873 AD), Zhang Di, the Governor of Hengzhou, submitted a petition to the imperial court for an honorific title for the Stone Altar of the Nine Immortals on Ziguai Peak, and the request was approved. According to A Brief Record of Nanyue compiled by Li Chongzhao at the end of the Tang Dynasty, the biographies of the Nine True Immortals and the affairs of the Nine Immortals Palace are also recorded therein, with contents roughly consistent with this book.
