Central Essence Scripture of Supreme Clarity 太清中黄真经

Also known as The Zhonghuang Scripture, Treatise on the Embryonic Treasury, and The Embryonic Treasury Zhonghuang Scripture.

Originally attributed to "Composed by the Nine Immortal Lords, Annotated by the True Lord Zhonghuang"—both are fictional attributions based on the scripture’s doctrines. According to the explanatory note on the title recorded in Volume 13 of Yunji Qiqian (Seven Bamboo Slips of the Cloudy Satchel): "Zhonghuang refers to the Most Honored One of the Nine Heavens. I first ascended the sacred path from the mortal world" and so on, indicating that the compiler of the scripture and the annotator were actually the same person. Additionally, the annotations contain phrases such as "To comprehend the profound origin, one must first grasp the meaning and purport" and cite texts like The Supreme Ascent to Mystery Scripture, The Cavern-Mysterious Scripture, and The Cavern-Spirit Scripture—common practices in Taoist writings of the Tang Dynasty. Thus, it is suspected that this scripture was composed by a Taoist Priest during the Tang Dynasty.

The original annotated version was presumably in one volume, corresponding to the meaning of "All practices converge into one." The edition in The Daozang is divided into two volumes, included in the Methods Category of the The Dongshen Section. The scripture comprises eighteen chapters, each with several lines of seven-character rhymed verses, and each chapter is titled with the first four characters.

The core tenet of both the scripture and its annotations is what is called "The meaning excels in achieving the Dao; the words exhaust the art of nourishing life"—it expounds on internal cultivation and health-preserving methods through philosophical principles rooted in Taoism, emphasizing the cultivation of Qi and alignment with the Dao.
