The author is unknown.
It was probably compiled during the The Tang Dynasty. It is not included in the Zhengtong Daozang (Orthodox Daoist Canon).
The Dunhuang manuscript P2467 is incomplete at the beginning but intact at the end, with a title at the end of the volume. Preserving 1,168 lines of text, it is a rare long scroll among Dunhuang Taoist manuscript copies.
Compendium of Essential Meanings
This manuscript mainly excerpts five Taoist classics and compiles them into a single work. The five classics are: Taishang Dadao Yuqing Jing (Supreme Great Dao Jade Pure Scripture), Yuanshi Tianzun Yingbian Lihua Jing (Primordial Lord's Scripture of Responding to Changes and Transforming Through Epochs), Wushang Neimi Zhenzang Jing (Supreme Inner Secret Scripture of the True Treasury), Taixuan Zhenyi Benji Miaojing (Supreme Mystery True One Scripture of the Original Boundary), and Taishang Yebao Yinyuan Jing (Supreme Scripture of Karmic Retribution and Affinities)—all of which are important Taoist classics from the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Sui, and Tang dynasties.
