Concordance Textual Explanations

Compiled by Yu Yan, a scholar at the end of the Song Dynasty and the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, this work is one volume long and included in the Taixuan Section of The Daozang.

This book extracts variant characters, words and reversed phrases from various versions of the Zhouyi Cantong Qi, collates and interprets them against one another to distinguish the correct from the erroneous.

Concordance Textual Explanations

The versions collated include not only the annotated editions by Peng Xiao, Zhu Xi, Zhang Boduan, Zhan Gu, Liu Yongnian, Wang Baoyi, Chen Zhixu and other scholars, but also anonymous lost versions without recorded origins. On the whole, the book belittles Peng Xiao while extolling Zhu Xi—a view that is not necessarily reliable, and it embodies the textual research thoughts of Taoism academics based on the integration of five elements and I Ching theories.
