The author is unknown.

It was presumably compiled during the Wei and Jin dynasties.

It was recorded as Treatise on Health Preservation of the Taoist Forest in the Secret Catalogue of the Southern Song Dynasty, which refers to this very book.

Daoist Life Preservation Manual

The existing version has one volume and is included in the Zhengyi Section of The Daozang.

The book is divided into six chapters, with the contents of the first two chapters lost. The remaining four chapters are The Yellow Emperor’s Miscellaneous Taboos, Massage Methods, Methods of Regulating Qi and Living Environment in sequence. Each chapter mainly introduces general knowledge of health care in daily diet and daily life, as well as techniques for preventing diseases and Health Preservation to prolong life. Tao Hongjing of the Liang Dynasty wrote Records of Nourishing Nature and Extending Life, which was influenced by this book.
