Discourses of the Mystic Breeze Meeting
The volume opens with the compiler's preface written in the Chenchen year of Emperor Taizong of the Yuan Dynasty (1232), which states: The National Preceptor True Man Changchun (Qiu Chuji) was once summoned by imperial edict to travel to the Western Regions to meet Genghis Khan, the Great Ancestor. The story of his journey there and back has already been recorded in Travels of the True Man Changchun to the Western Regions by Li Zhichang. His words on discussing the Dao and exploring the mysterious were recorded by the emperor's close attendants and kept confidential. The author compiled and published this secret record by imperial order, intending to let "the whole world know this extraordinary event of the auspicious gathering of the mysterious Dao".The content of the talks between Qiu Chuji and Genghis Khan recorded in the book centers on expounding the great Dao of non-action and the principles of cultivating oneself and governing a state. It first discusses the way to longevity, emphasizing abandoning sensual pleasures and delicate flavors, and taking purifying the heart and reducing desires as the essential of self-cultivation. It then expounds the way of benefiting the world, comforting the people, and accumulating merits and virtues, stressing revering heaven and loving the people, and cherishing life and abhorring killing as the foundation. All his words are simple and straightforward.
Records of the Buddhists and Taoists in The History of the Yuan Dynasty documents Qiu Chuji's journey westward to persuade Genghis Khan to cease military campaigns and end killings, which is largely consistent with the essential purpose of this book.
