Judging from its content, it is believed to have been compiled by Taoists between the Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty.

Consisting of six volumes, it is included in the Methods category of the The Dongshen Section in The Daozang. This book is a compilation of several external alchemy and gold-lead transmutation techniques. The first five volumes mainly excerpt from various alchemical works such as Baopuzi·Chapters on Gold and Lead, Baopuzi·Chapters on Golden Elixirs, Immortal Sun’s Alchemical Scripture, and Immortal Ge’s Purple Cloud Alchemical Scripture, with Secret Essentials of Golden Elixirs: Commentary on the "Can Tong Qi" written by Meng Yaofu of Xuanzhenzi appended at the end. Therefore, this book is suspected to be compiled by Meng Yaofu. Meng’s work mainly discusses the principles and methods of refining elixirs using true dragon and tiger (true lead and mercury). It states that the true dragon refers to mercury extracted from cinnabar, named "gong" (mercury); the true tiger refers to silver extracted from black lead, named "qian" (lead). Its elixir-refining process is described as: "First, extract true mercury from cinnabar; the mercury transforms into yellow sprout by relying on lead; the yellow sprout then transforms back into cinnabar; the cinnabar is subdued by fire and transformed into the return elixir." The book details the methods of nurturing yellow sprout and subduing cinnabar with fire to refine the elixir together. The sixth volume of the original book also collects more than thirty gold-lead transmutation techniques, including the Method of Transmuting Metal (dian geng fa), the Method of Concealing Gold (yan jin fa), the Method of Transforming Metal into Powder (hua geng fen fa), and so on.
