Emergency Immortal Formulas

The original author of this book is unknown.

It was presumably compiled during the Ming Dynasty, consisting of eleven volumes and included in the Taiping Section of The Daozang. There is also a six-volume version included in the Complete Library of Four Treasuries, which was compiled from extracts of the Yongle Encyclopedia.

Emergency Immortal Formulas

The content of this book is divided into three parts. The first three volumes are Collected Emergency Prescriptions for Gynecological and Obstetric Diseases written by Xu Shouzhen of the Ming Dynasty, focusing on prescriptions for treating gynecological and obstetric ailments. These volumes are categorized into sections on pregnancy-related disorders, difficult labor-related conditions, postpartum illnesses, and miscellaneous gynecological diseases. Volumes 4 to 5 are Jiyin Compilation, with its author unknown. The remaining six volumes form another independent work, which records prescriptions for treating surgical diseases. This part is divided into sections including the Immortal-transmitted Secret Prescriptions for Treating Traumas and Fractures, Prescriptions for Injury and Damage, Treatments for Sores and Ulcers, Secretly Transmitted Prescriptions for Five Types of Hemorrhoids, and Shangqing Ziting Prescriptions for Consumptive Diseases.

It is evident that this book is a compilation of three separate medical texts, collecting a large number of proven prescriptions for gynecological and obstetric disorders, traumas, hemorrhoids, consumptive diseases and other ailments. Among them, Volume 11 includes the "Methods of Treating Consumptive Diseases in the Jingming Sect", indicating that this book was presumably compiled by Taoist priests of the Jingming Sect in the Ming Dynasty, which is deeply rooted in the theories of Taoism and Five Elements.
