Esoteric Diet Manual
The existing version in The Daozang is included in the Methods Category of the Dongshen Section. As a work focusing on dietary therapy and health preservation, this book is divided into two chapters: Appropriate Foods and Monthly Appropriateness. It adopts the form of dialogues between the Immortal of Longing and the True Person to expound the methods of dietary nourishment. The main tenet holds that food selection must conform to the seasons and lunar months, focusing on balancing the five flavors, nourishing the five zang-organs and curing various diseases. The Appropriate Foods chapter lists more than one hundred kinds of recommended foods including meats, fruits, grains and vegetables, specifying their properties and the diseases they treat. The Monthly Appropriateness chapter enumerates the suitable foods for each of the twelve months across the four seasons in sequence.
