Gazetteer of Tiantai Mountain

Tiantai Mountain is situated in present-day Tiantai County, Zhejiang Province, and is a famous sacred mountain of Taoism. Tongbai Abbey on the mountain was first built in the early Tang Dynasty. Renowned Taoist Priests of the Tang and Song dynasties including Sima Chengzhen, Tian Xuying, Du Guangting, Jian Qiu Fangyuan, Zhang Wumeng and Bai Yuchan all cultivated the Dao here, leaving numerous cultural relics and historical sites through the ages.

The book opens with An Examination of the Prefectural Gazetteer, which outlines the topography and historical evolution of Tiantai Mountain. It then transcribes literary works such as Ode to Tiantai Mountain by Sun Xinggong of the Jin Dynasty, Stele of Tongbai Abbey by Cui Shang of the Tang Dynasty, Record of the Reconstruction of the Daozang by Xia Shu of the Song Dynasty, Record of the Renovation of Tongbai Abbey by Cao Xun, as well as poems composed by Li Bai, Liu Mi, Luo Yin, Lü Dongbin, Bai Yuchan and other literati. These works narrate the scenic historical sites on the mountain including grottoes, streams, Taoist abbeys, wells and springs respectively, with elegant and insightful expressions.
