Hagiographies of the Three Huagai Perfected
Huagai Mountain is located in Chongren County, Jiangxi Province, where there are temples and historical relics dedicated to the Three True Lords: Fuqiu, Wang and Guo. According to legend, Lord Fuqiu was an immortal of the Zhou Dynasty who descended to the mortal world in the Jin Dynasty, enlightened True Lord Wang Bao and True Lord Guo, and guided them to attain immortality—they were hence known as the "Three True Immortals" by later generations. Since the Tang and Song Dynasty, numerous sacred relics associated with the Three True Immortals have been found at Huagai Mountain and across the Jiangnan region, which were widely recorded by literati and Taoist priests. This book was recompiled based on the records of predecessors, and was not completed by a single author at one time. The narratives in the book date as late as the end of the Song Dynasty, while the final block-printed edition was published in the fifth year of the Yongle reign in the early Ming Dynasty (1407).The first two volumes were compiled by Shen Tingrui. He first quoted Song-dynasty classics such as the Imperial Readings of the Taiping Era and the Records of the Nine Regions, giving a brief account of Lord Fuqiu's life deeds and his relics. He also included Epigraph of the Two True Lords Wang and Guo by Yan Zhenqing of the Tang Dynasty, Record of the Three True Immortals by Li Chongyuan of the Song Dynasty, as well as his own work Veritable Records of the Two True Lords, which narrate the story of Lord Fuqiu enlightening Wang and Guo and leading them to immortality. The book also appends the imperial edicts issued by Emperor Shenzong, Emperor Zhezong, Emperor Huizong and Emperor Lizong of the Song Dynasty to confer honorific titles on the Three True Lords.
Volumes Three to Six contain Facts of Huagai Mountain compiled by Zhang Yuanshu. This work not only provides a more detailed and comprehensive narration than Shen Tingrui's compilation, but also supplements the Taoist sacred relics of Huagai Mountain after Shen's death. Among them, Volumes Three and Four record the peaks, grottoes, caves, ridges, extraordinary auspicious omens, as well as scenic spots such as palaces, abbeys, altars and wells at Huagai Mountain. Volumes Five and Six include biographies of Shen Tingrui, Zhan Taichu, the Taoist Priest Mao, the lay scholar Rao and others, and also compile twenty-five strange tales and anecdotes related to the Three True Immortals.
