It was roughly completed between the Tang and Song dynasties. Chao Gongwu recorded it as two volumes in his Junzhai Dushuzhi (Bibliographic Notes on Books in the Prefectural Study). The existing version included in the Siku Quanshu (Complete Library of the Four Treasuries) is divided into nine volumes, while the version preserved in the Daozang (Daoist Canon) has three volumes and is included in the Yujue (Jade Commentary) category of the Dongshen Section of the Daozang. This work annotates the Kangcangzi, providing an interpretation of the title and a summary of the core purport for each chapter. The Siku Quanshu Zongmu Tiyao (Annotated Bibliography of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries) comments on this book that "its annotations are concise and unadorned, unlike the writing style prevalent after the Song Dynasty".
