Heaven and Earth Are One Finger 什么是天地一指

Heaven and Earth Are One Finger
This means the equality and unity of heaven and earth.
It comes from Zhuangzi · Qi Wu Lun (The Sorting of Things):
“Heaven and earth are but one finger; all things are but one horse.”
“Zhi” (finger) means pointing out, naming, or concept. It is an important concept in the School of Names.
Heaven and Earth Are One Finger
Heaven and Earth Are One FingerGongsun Longzi, On Names and Things:
“Things are not without names, but the name is not the thing itself.”
Nothing in the world is called a “thing” without being first named or pointed out by humans.
“Zhi” refers to concepts and terms, the universal essence of things,
but not the concrete act of pointing at things — hence “the name is not the thing itself.”
Zhuangzi opposed the arguments of the School of Names.
Zhuangzi · Qi Wu Lun states:
“To use a finger to show that a finger is not a finger
is not as good as using a non‑finger to show that a finger is not a finger.”
Moreover, all things in the world are changeable and uncertain;
right and wrong are endless and cannot be clearly distinguished.
By not distinguishing right from wrong, following nature,
and grasping the axis of the Dao,
one realizes that the multiplicity of all things
is but a manifestation of the Dao —
this is “heaven and earth as one finger.”
This view is a core insight of early Taoism,
and shares profound spiritual resonance with the thought of Laozi.
