Huangdi Neijing Suwen - Annotated Edition 黄帝内经素问补注释文

Compiled and annotated by Wang Bing, the Imperial Horse Administrator of the Tang Dynasty, and officially revised by Lin Yi and others in the Northern Song Dynasty by imperial order.

The original version consisted of 24 volumes, or alternatively 12 volumes, with dozens of printed editions from the Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties and modern times.

In The Daozang, it is divided into 50 volumes and included in the Tai Xuan Section.

As the earliest existing classic of medical science, Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor's Internal Classic) was roughly compiled during the Qin and Han dynasties. According to the record in Book of Han·Treatise on Arts and Literature, the original book had 18 volumes, 9 of which are Suwen (Plain Questions). Divided into 81 chapters, this book mainly discusses the basic theories of traditional Chinese medicine (such as the Yin and Yang theory, the Zang-Fu and Meridians theory), supplemented by content on health care, disease diagnosis and treatment, and acupuncture. Due to errors in the original version, overlapping chapters, reversed order, and disconnected meanings, Wang Bing of the Tang Dynasty rearranged and sorted it out, abridged redundancies, supplemented deficiencies, added annotations, and developed the theory of the Five Circuits of Qi and Six Qi Stages. Wang Bing's annotated version has 24 volumes, but it contains many textual errors, interpolations, and unauthorized additions to the ancient book. In the middle years of the Jiayou reign in the Northern Song Dynasty (1056-1063), Lin Yi and others were ordered by the emperor to revise Suwen. They referenced ancient medical books from the Han and Tang dynasties to correct more than 6,000 errors in Wang Bing's annotated version and added over 2,000 annotations, restoring the classic to its original form. Subsequently, most printed editions of Suwen in successive dynasties were based on this revised version.
