Inscription of Gaoyang Temple
The inscription states that the Most High Xuanyuan Emperor (Laozi) is the parent of Heaven and Earth, and has descended to serve as the teacher of emperors in successive ages since the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, as well as the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties. In the fourth year of the Zhonghe reign of Emperor Xizong of the Tang Dynasty (884), an ancient brick was unearthed in Sichuan, inscribed with six characters: “The Most High Quells the Disaster of Zhonghe”. Emperor Xizong therefore allocated 2 million cash from the imperial treasury to build Qingyang Palace. This inscription was carved at Qingyang Palace in Chengdu.
