Instructional Verses of Wang Chongyang 重阳教化集

Compiled by Wang Zhe in the Jin Dynasty, it consists of three volumes and is included in the Taiping Section of The Daozang.

This book collects more than two hundred poems and qu songs, all of which are poetic exchanges between Wang Chongyang and Ma Yu during the period when Wang Chongyang enlightened and converted his disciple Ma Yu to the Dao. Compiled and published by Ma Danyang’s disciples, some poems and songs in this book also appear in other works such as Chongyang Quanzhen Ji (Anthology of the Double Ninth's Complete Perfection), Ma Yu’s Jianwu Ji (Anthology of Gradual Enlightenment) and Shenguang Can (Brilliance of Divine Light). The poetic exchanges between Wang and Ma are vivid records of the early The Quanzhen Dao missionary work and Dao propagation.

The content of these poems and songs all centers on forsaking love and desires, renouncing wine, sex, wealth and anger, taming the restlessness of the mind and will, and resolving to seek immortality. The Internal Alchemy methods expounded here focus on perceiving the mind and realizing one's true nature, holding that purity and tranquility of the mind harmonizes the spirit and qi. By practicing the circulation of qi in the three cinnabar fields and returning to one’s original true nature, the great elixir will be formed naturally.

Six prefaces written by Ma Danyang’s townsmen, relatives and friends are included at the beginning and the end of the book, recounting the entire process of Wang Chongyang enlightening and converting Ma Yu to the Dao, which provides valuable materials for the study of the early history of the Quanzhen Dao.
