The essential purpose is to use the skills of writing Taoist Talismans, reciting incantations and chanting true names to instantly transform natural phenomena such as heaven and earth, the sun and moon, the stars, rivers and streams, wind and thunder, and wild beasts, summoning, dispatching and altering them at will. For instance, the Art of Transforming Heaven and Earth involves writing the "Talisman of Submerging the Heavens" and reciting the "Incantation of Blending the Heavens" to trigger a sudden transformation of heaven and earth, blurring the line between day and night, sending sand flying and stones rolling, and dimming the light of the sun, moon and stars. Such teachings belong to the theories of the ancient Yin-Yang and numerical arts scholars rooted in the Five Elements school.
