Manifest Dao Scripture Taoist Classics 显道经

The author of this text is unknown, and it is believed to have been compiled during the The Tang Dynasty.

Comprising one volume, it is included in the Methods Category of the The Dongshen Section in The Daozang.

The scripture is divided into three sections, purportedly narrated by Laozi, focusing on techniques of qi circulation and grain abstinence.

The first section generally discusses the physiological conditions of Dao cultivators, such as facial complexion, age, zang-fu organs, and the three treasures of essence, qi, and spirit. It states that storing essence, nurturing Qi, and calming the spirit can preserve life and prolong longevity.

The second section, titled Explanation of the Primordial Dao, elaborates on matters related to cultivating the Dao and circulating qi in a secluded chamber. It advises that cultivators should select an auspicious time, bathe, and observe fasting before entering seclusion. When circulating qi, they should guide essence and qi to enter and exit the Dantian (elixir field), close their eyes to focus on the Dantian, visualize the five zang organs, and "maintain stable qi and single-minded intention"—naturally, qi will be abundant and hunger will cease.

The third section, Method of Grain Abstinence and Qi Cultivation, instructs practitioners to reside in a quiet room, concentrate the spirit on the three Dantians, rinse the mouth to produce saliva and swallow it, circulate the six qi to eliminate six types of illnesses, and then practice qi absorption and grain abstinence. Following this method for three years will result in "a radiant complexion"; after six years, one can "foresee life and death"; and after nine years, one will attain the status of a True Person and "share longevity with heaven."
