According to the author's preface dated the ninth year of the Dazhong reign (855 AD) at the beginning of the book: "While reading Taoist scriptures, I accidentally came across the essential formulas for elixirs that Lord Jiuxiao imparted to Liu Hong before their parting.... Now I have selected the key teachings and written them down beside my seat, naming the work Xuanjie Lu." Thus, it can be inferred that the book was compiled during the Tang Dynasty. It was already recorded in General Catalog of Chongwen Library during the Northern Song Dynasty. The existing version in The Daozang consists of one volume, included in the Methods category of the Dongshen Section. It is also collected in Volume 64 of Yunji Qilai (Seven Notes of the Cloud Satchel) under the title Xuanjie Lu (Records of Mysterious Interpretation).

The book falsely claims that the immortal Lord Jiuxiao descended to the residence of Taoist Priest Liu Hong in the first year of the Yanguang reign of Emperor An of the Han Dynasty (122 AD), imparting methods for distinguishing golden elixirs and mineral medicines, as well as removing their toxicity. It states that all golden elixirs and mineral medicines crafted by the world contain toxicity, and taking them will surely lead to death. Only Divine Talisman Elixir, White Snow Elixir, and Nine-Cycle Elixir are supreme medicines refined by immortals, which can grant longevity and ascension to immortality when taken. There are also taboos for refining and ingesting these three elixirs: "Each has the 'Three-Ones' prohibition method, which must not be lightly transmitted."

The book declares: "The 'Three-Ones' are the mechanism of creation. They exist not only in supreme medicines but also inherently in every human body"; if one can constantly regulate the "Three-Ones" within the body, they can achieve harmony between spirit and qi, free from all worries, and "unite with the qi of the blue firmament, with inner and outer radiance, and become one with emptiness—thus ascending to immortality." The book also records the Formula for Shou Xian Wu Zi Wan (Immortal-Guarding Five-Seed Pill) transmitted by Lord Jiubei, which uses five herbal medicines including Phyllanthus emblica, Rubus idaeus, Cuscuta chinensis, Schisandra chinensis, and Plantago asiatica to make pills. Taking these pills can eliminate the toxicity of metals and minerals. It is claimed that Zhang Guo, the Taoist master Tongxuan of the Tang Dynasty, presented this formula to the imperial court during the Kaiyuan reign (713-741 AD), and "Emperor Xuanzong was overjoyed and kept it secret in the imperial palace."
