Pure Brightness Canon for Salvation 太上灵宝净明飞仙度人经法

Originally attributed to "Xu Jingyang, the True Minister of Supreme Eminence, Divine Merit and Wonderful Salvation, in interpretation". Textual research indicates this work was compiled by Taoist priests of the Xishan Pure Brightness Sect in the Yuan Dynasty, falsely claiming to be transmitted by Perfect Lord Xu in a divine descent.

According to the table of contents at the opening, the original work consisted of five volumes, divided into three parts and forty-one chapters: On the Subtle with ten chapters, On the Scriptures with twenty-eight chapters, and On the Exegesis of Regulations with three chapters.

Pure Brightness Canon for Salvation

Today, five volumes of this text are included in the Methods category of the Dongxuan Section of the Daozang, alongside an additional volume titled Exegesis of Regulations for the Method of the Flying Immortals for Delivering All Beings—its volume and chapter divisions no longer conform to the original. The two parts On the Scriptures and On the Subtle contain both the scriptural text and commentary: the scriptural passages are largely excerpted from The Lingbao Scripture for Delivering All Beings, while the commentaries derive from The Great Dharma of the Shangqing and Lingbao of the Southern Song Dynasty. On the Exegesis of Regulations provides a comprehensive explanation of the stylistic rules of the preceding two parts.

The Taoist methods expounded in this text are primarily based on the talismanic and incantatory arts of The Lingbao Sect, with its Internal Alchemy doctrines influenced by the Southern School of the Golden Elixir tradition. Only the teachings of filial piety, loyalty and pure brightness represent the original creation of the Taoist priests of the Pure Brightness Sect.
