Pure Brightness Liturgy of Repentance

Author unknown.

The honorific title of Xu Xun conferred in the Yuan Dynasty—Perfect Lord of Ultimate Dao, Mysterious Response, Divine Merit and Wondrous Salvation—appears in the text, indicating that this work is a Taoist scripture of the Jingming Sect from the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. Originally in one volume, it is included in the Rites category of the Dongxuan Section of The Daozang.

Pure Brightness Liturgy of Repentance

The book records the Jingming Sect’s ritual of homage and repentance. First, it praises the Perfect Lord, and sincerely takes refuge in the Three Pure Ones, the Four Heavenly Emperors of the Golden Palace, and the Perfect Lord’s parents. Next, it enumerates the Ten High Precepts of Taoism one by one, repents of the sins committed against the Ten Precepts since past lives, and praises the virtuous deeds and miracles of the Perfect Lord.

The eulogies mention the miraculous stories of Lord Xu Xun, such as leaving behind the Eight Treasures in his instructions, sinking the talisman into the river, floating the bamboo on the riverside, resigning his official post to seek the Dao, transforming charcoal into a woman, and ascending to heaven in his entire household. All these derive from Biography of Lord Xu Xun of Jinyang.
