Records of the Canonization of the Three Mao Lords 三茅真君加封事典

Compiled by Zhang Dachun, a Taoist priest of the Maoshan Sect in the Southern Song Dynasty.

Two volumes in total, it is included in the Genealogy and Records category of the Shangqing Section in the Daozang.

Records of the Canonization of the Three Mao Lords

A preface written by the author in the Dingmao year (1267) is attached at the beginning of the book, which states: In the reign of Emperor Lizong of the Song Dynasty, the Taoist priest Situ Shitan petitioned for the enfeoffment of the Three Mao True Lords, and the emperor approved the request. In the ninth year of the Chunyou reign (1249), the Great Mao Lord was conferred the title of "True Lord of Supreme Primacy, Wonderful Dao, Transcendent Emptiness and Sacred Blessing, Upper Minister of the Eastern Yue and God of Life"; the Middle Mao Lord was conferred the title of "True Lord of Fixed Blessing, Right Guardian, Jade Dao, Transcendent Tranquility and Virtuous Blessing"; and the Lesser Mao Lord was conferred the title of "True Lord of the Three Officials, Preserving Life, Subtle Wonder, Transcendent Wisdom and Benevolent Blessing". After Situ Shitan's death, his disciple Zhang Dachun carried on his master's wish and compiled this book to narrate the whole process of this enfeoffment event.

The book compiles imperial edicts, memorials, official dispatches, prayers, lists of bestowed ritual artifacts related to the enfeoffment of the Three Mao True Lords, as well as ritual ceremony texts, thank-you memorials and stone stele presentation memorials. The imperial edicts recorded in this book were adopted and included in Gazetteer of Maoshan Mountain compiled by Liu Dabin in the Yuan Dynasty.
