Supreme Cavern True Origin Mysterious Scripture 上方大洞真元妙经品

The original work bears no compiler’s name.

According to textual research, it was compiled by Shi Yong of the Jin Dynasty (Daoist name: Xiao Yao) or his disciple "Zi Ming".

It is included in the Numinous Charts category of the Dongxuan Section of The Daozang.

At the beginning of the text is a preface falsely attributed to the Imperial Composure of Emperor Ming of the Tang Dynasty, which states that the "Upper Heaven Opening Transformation Limitless Supreme Lord of Lingbao" resides in the Heaven of Unified Qi Transformation and the Nation of the Nine Clear Natural Realms, proclaiming the doctrinal model and commanding the host of perfected immortals to transmit the scripture and transform beings.

The scripture is divided into three chapters. The first is the main scripture, falsely attributed to the Upper Heaven Emperor-Ming Opening Transformation Lord and the Great Element Pure Emptiness Perfected One, who expound the path of cultivating the "Great Dong Perfected Origin". It holds that practitioners should "first practice filial piety and fraternal respect, then reverence and humility, advance in celestial merit, and serve the master to uphold the Dao".

The second is Chapter of the Original Source of the Dongzhen Scripture, spoken by "Master Shen Feng". It first broadly discusses the titles and essentials of the Three Canons, Seven Sections, and other Taoist texts and masters, then outlines the main meaning of The Upper Cavern Great Dong Scripture.

The third is Chapter of Divine Responses in the Immortal Scripture, spoken by "Scholar of Blue Clouds", which tells the divine efficacies of reciting The Perfected Origin Scripture and the method of wearing the "Jade Talisman for Eliminating Calamities and Resolving Distress".

Attached at the end is a Postscript written by Shi Yong’s disciple. It first lists the four classic scriptures spoken by the Upper Heaven Lord, then outlines the essential meaning of The Upper Cavern Great Dong Perfected Origin Scripture, whose teachings blend the Confucian doctrines of rectifying the heart and cultivating the self with the Daoist path of emptiness, tranquility and non-action.

This book is of important reference value for investigating the classic doctrines of the Taoist Shangfang Zhenyuan Sect during the Song and Jin dynasties.
